Student Projects
Bioenergy Garden
The Bioenergy Garden, a consortium of bioenergy producing plants from the southeast US, was a timely initiative by the Georgia Southern university supported by the College of Science & Mathematics. Students from 'Biology of Plants' class developed the garden as part of the class project. The garden portrayed over 15 leading biofuel feedstock species and the initiative made it to the front page of the local newspaper Statesboro Herald.
Sustainability Fair
The Statesboro farmers' market organizes the Sustainability Fair every October and the students from Agroecology and Sustainable Forestry class present educational posters (and interactive events) on sustainable farming. In past two fairs, students have presented total five posters on topics like, organic farming, composting, and agroforestry.
International Festival
The Statesboro International Festival is organized by the GSU Center for International Studies every November. This year (2012) students from Sustainable Forestry class portrayed the sustainability across the globe. They have highlighted different sustainability practices in Asia, Africa, Australia, Europe, and North & South America with multiple posters and educational materials. This event is supported by the GSU Center for Sustainability.
On Campus Farmer's Market
GSU Center for Sustainability organizes the farmers' market on campus once a month during Fall & Spring. Students from Agroecology and Sustainable Forestry present posters and educational materials on sustainable agriculture at this event.
Service Learning
Students from Sustainable Forestry and Agroecology class participate at the 'Garden Club', where they help school children learn about planting and growing of vegetables. This is a joint initiative by Julia P Bryant Elementary School and GSU, which raises awareness about plants, gardening and sustainability.
Invasive Plants Removal
Environmental Biology and Sustainable Forestry students participate in invasive plants removal on campus. This community service volunteering opportunity is organized by GSU Landscape Services. Students work with the Landscape Services staff and remove invasive species like Chinese privet, Tallow, and Japanese climbing fern.
